Man Arrested After "Suspicious Package" Found At NSW Parliament
Fairfax

A man has been arrested following the evacuation of NSW Parliament House after a 'suspicious item' was discovered nearby.

Dozens of police and specialist units were called to Hospital Road, at the rear of the building, just after 10:30am on Monday morning following reports a package had been found on a walkway between Parliament House and the State Library.

Hundreds of staff were evacuated into The Domain on the grounds as police arrived on scene.

Half an hour later, workers were told the police operation was over and they were allowed to return inside the building.

A man was later arrested outside the Parliament building.

It is understood the man was identified using CCTV footage and is now assisting police with their inquiries, a NSW Police spokeswoman told the ABC.

In what is believed to be a seperate, unrelated, incident, a suspicious package was also found in an office building on the corner of Phillip and Bridge Street in the Sydney CBD.

Traffic diversions were in place while Hazmat and NSW Fire and Rescue assessed the package, found in the mail room of the building, before deeming it safe.
