Play School is still on TV but for many of its avid watchers, there's no time in the busy work day to catch up with Big Ted and the Rocket Clock.

These friends from the beloved children's show are on display at The National Museum of Australia exhibition 'Happy Birthday Play School: Celebrating 50 years'.

You read that correctly, it's been 50 years since Jemima and Little Ted first broadcast on ABC. Like its viewers, some of the hosts are now in grandparent and great-grandparent territory, but Big Ted hasn't aged a day.

The exhibition features the Rocket Clock, the Flower Clock and the famous Play School Windows while Big Ted, Little Ted, Humpty and Jemima are displayed in a special party section where people can get up close and meet their childhood friends in the fur.

Comedian Rove and Gardening Australia host Costa Georgiadis weren't too shy to introduce themselves.

National Museum senior curator Sophie Jensen said the exhibition went beyond nostalgia to the core of children's entertainment.

“This exhibition offers a window on the changing experience of Australian childhood," Jensen said.

"And it allows adults the chance to indulge in a little nostalgia, while children wonder at the magic that the program still delivers to them on a daily basis."

The official anniversary isn't until July 18 but the exhibition will run from in Canberra from May 7 to July 24, 2016. Then, it's bed time for Jemima and Big Ted.

Good night children!
