Three officers assaulted, six arrested in Potts Point brawl before lockout: police

Three police officers were assaulted as they broke up a violent brawl in Potts Point overnight,15 minutes before the 1.30am lockout laws kicked in on Sunday.

Officers from Kings Cross Local Area Command used capsicum spray after the group of young men and women set upon the officers about 1.15am.

Four women and two men were arrested over the melee, which resulted in an array of charges including using offensive language, resisting police and assaulting police.

The group were swearing and arguing loudly when they were approached by police patrolling Bayswater Road and Kellett Street, NSW Police said in a statement.

As the officers approached the group, a 19-year-old man allegedly started punching another man. The teenager then allegedly struck and kicked officers several times as they were arresting him.

A 22-year-old woman also allegedly assaulted the officers as they were arresting the teenager, prompting the officers to use capsicum spray on both of them, the statement said.

As officers were attempting to put the pair into a police vehicle, a 21-year-old woman and a 25-year-old man joined in, allegedly hindering and assaulting the officers.

Two more women, aged 24 and 23, also allegedly hindered and assaulted the officers during the melee.

Further officers arrived and arrested all involved and took them to Kings Cross police station.

The 19-year-old man was charged with using offensive language, three counts of resisting and hindering police, and four counts of assaulting police.

The 21-year-old woman was charged with offensive behaviour, three counts of resisting and hindering police, and assaulting police.

The 25-year-old man was charged with two counts of resisting and hindering police.

The 24-year-old woman was charged with offensive behaviour and resisting and hindering police.

The 23-year-old woman was charged with offensive behaviour, resisting and hindering police and assaulting police.

All were granted strict conditional bail and are due to appear before Downing Centre Local Court on May 31.

Three police officers suffered minor injuries and completed the rest of their shifts without incident, the statement said.
