If losing in professional sport is hard enough, then losing 62-0 in a professional rugby league match is shattering.
That's what happened to the Newcastle Knights on Sunday, the home side utterly embarrassed by the Cronulla Sharks in front of local fans.
And star full-back Dane Gagai certainly took the loss to heart, breaking down in tears just moments after full-time.
The rare display of such raw emotion prompted some commentators and fans to express concern of Gagai's wellbeing.
Former Queensland Origin star Petero Civoniceva later revealed on Twitter that Gagai had lost his grandmother earlier that day. It was also reported that Gagai was subjected to racial abuse after the game in Newcastle.
Gagai later told Fox Sports that he was feeling the full weight of the Knights' predicament, in last place on the ladder with just one win in 10 matches.
"It's a tough one, it's a tough pill to swallow," he said.
"Especially at home, had all the fans turn up, Indigenous Round, we had everything to play for. We're going to go through some tough times before we go through good."
