Outspoken Liberal Democrats senator David Leyonhjelm has come out with the weirdest ad of election season so far, putting leashes on two pugs -- "Mal" and "Bill" -- as they try to tuck into an egg.
Leyonhjelm, whose parliamentary future may be on the chopping block after changes to Senate voting rules that will cruel the chances of minor parties entering the upper house, released the ad titled "Don't let Mal and Bill get their grubby paws on your Super" on Friday morning. In it, the senator talks about superannuation, and criticises recent policies outlined by Labor and the Coalition.
"I've spent 30 years building this up, and it's still growing," Leyonhjelm says, as the camera pans over his 'super nest egg' -- a golden egg, which two pug dogs then begin eating.
"I hope Malcolm and Bill take good care of it."
The senator's office described the ad as a "a pitch towards annoyed superannuants", with Leyonhjelm then pulling on the dogs' leashes.
Leyonhjelm has courted controversy with advertisements in recent days, claiming that Liberal Party federal director filed a complaint against another Liberal Democrat ad which featured footage of the House of Representatives. In response, Leyonhjelm cut another ad, titled "Nutt Has No Balls".
Then, of course, there's his regularly wild social media game, which includes videos where he smokes a giant cigar and microwaves a fish in a shoe.
