On Friday night at Carriageworks in Sydney Oscar de la Renta officially closed Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia with its Summer 2016 collection. One of the first international luxury brands to present alongside Australia's designers at Australian fashion week, the turnout was expectedly impressive.
Born Oscar Arisides Renta Fiallo, the New York based fashion house was established in 1965 under the name Oscar de la Renta, and is currently under the creative direction of Peter Copping. The Dominican designer also made creations for French couture house Balmain back in the early 90s. He passed away in 2014.
"We are very excited to partner with IMG and Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia for our first show in Sydney. We look forward to bringing the world of Oscar de la Renta to stylish Australians," Alex Bolen, Chief Executive Officer of Oscar de la Renta LLC said in a statement.
The collection itself was classic, well thought out and true to the de la Renta aesthetic. Models walked to an orchestral version of Madonna's Papa Don't Preach, while two young flower girls accompany a bride was undoubtedly the highlight. de la Renta is known for its couture bridal -- who could forget Carrie Bradshaw's wedding gown in the SATC movie.
Aussie supermodel and Victoria's Secret catwalk queen Shanina Shaik returned to Sydney to walk in the Oscar de la Renta show, officially closing the week.
