Poor air quality and a thick smoke haze is expected to hit some parts of NSW this weekend as firefighters conduct controlled burns across several parts of the state.

New South Wales Health says those with respiratory disease should minimise their exposure to smoke and stay indoors.

Health officials also warn that smoke exposure can lead to worsening outcomes for people with lung disease or chronic bronchitis.

The NSW Rural Fire Service (NSWRFS) said there would be 70 controlled hazard reduction burns including the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury, Hornsby, the Central Coast, Hunter Valley and Queanbeyan.

The news will disappoint may Sydneysiders, but residents will reportedly have to get used to more controlled burns in autumn.

Reports from the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO's State of the Climate are said to indicate this time of year might be the best for burning off in south-eastern Australia in the future.

The incoming haze this weekend comes after a smoke cloud settled over Sydney earlier this month, blanketing the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

That heavy smoke cloud was caused by large scale controlled burning carried out by the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) in the Blue Mountains.
