Police and emergency services are currently at the scene of a collision in Keilor Park.

One person is dead and six others have been hospitalised after a petrol tanker rolled and crushed a car on a Melbourne freeway.

Fuel was reportedly spilling from the petrol tanker after it rolled and crushed the car on the Calder Freeway on Tuesday morning. Images of the scene show a black four wheel drive was also flipped in the crash.

The six injured people have neck, shoulder and facial injuries and remain in a stable condition in hospital.

Ambulance Victoria said that two others were assessed at the scene but weren't hospitalised.

Inspector John Kelly has since told reporters that it is one of the worst crashes that senior police have come across, The Age reports.

"I don't think you get much worse than this," he told reporters.

A car was earlier trapped beneath the oil tanker, and while it is unclear how many people were inside it, at least one person has been confirmed deceased, according to Victoria Police spokeswoman Natalie Webster.

The crash reportedly caused a chain-reaction with other cars, causing them to also crash on the freeway.

VicRoads spokesman Steve Bean told the ABC the tanker was on its side and leaking fuel.

"Unfortunately there's about 10 other vehicles that are involved in that incident," he told the ABC.

"Police, Vic Roads and all emergency services are on site at the moment. As I say, it's likely to be an extended closure of the freeway today."
