Police have recovered the body of a four-year-old boy who drowned in a car after it rolled into the Hawkesbury River, north west of Sydney, on Sunday morning.
Officers said the ute, driven by the young boy's grandfather, was reversing a boat into the river when the vehicle slid into the water and was submerged.
After the driver got out of the vehicle to disconnect the boat from the trailer, he made frantic attempts to retrieve the boy, but was unsuccessful.
The incident occurred at around 10:45am (AEST) when police and ambulance paramedics were called to a boat ramp at a caravan park on River Road, Lower Portland.
Officers from Hawkesbury Local Area Command, PolAir and police divers conducted an extensive search to locate the submerged vehicle over several hours.
The boy was found inside the car, approximately 20 metres from the boat ramp.
The boy's grandfather is reportedly speaking with police and a report into the investigation will be prepared for the Coroner.
