Police and emergency services are searching for a women believed to be attacked by a crocodile on a beach in the Daintree.
Police said the woman, aged in her 40s, was swimming with a friend at Thornton Beach near Cape Tribulation at 10.30pm on Sunday night.
Channel 9 news reported witnesses hearing the woman say "a croc's got me" before she disappeared.
The search including water police and SES volunteers is underway to try to locate the woman and used thermal imaging technology on a helicopter through the night.
MP Warren Entsch reacted callously to the search, saying "you can't legislate against human stupidity".
Entsch said the beach was nex door to a croc-spotting operation.
"This is a tragedy but it was avoidable. There are warning signs everywhere up there."
Also in Cape Tribulation, a man was found safe and well after a search was launched when he did not return from a fishing trip to a waterhole on Monday evening.
