For Northern Territory pet owners, a trip to the vet can mean more than 10 hours driving, sometimes through floods or bushfires.

Vet Susanna Samuelsson was living in the north east corner of Arnhem Land when she realised there was a need for a virtual vet clinic to give pet owners an idea of whether they needed to make the trip into town or not.

When she couldn't find what she was looking for, she created i-Vet herself.

"There are no other virtual vet clinics like i-Vet, so we have traversed uncharted waters during our development phase and pilot program," Samuelsson said.

"But now we are tried, tested and ready to launch to the world."

The website gives Skype-style video consultations with an emergency on-call vet and also has instructional videos for some simple treatments (no, you're not expected to give your pooch 'the snip').

It was developed with the help of the Northern Territory Government's Business Innovation Support Initiative and Minister for Business Peter Styles said it could help all people who couldn't easily get to a clinic.

"This also has the wider potential to assist people isolated not only geographically but by illness and disability as well."
