How Victoria Police Has Dealt With Mental Health And Suicide

Basically they're just told to suck it up.

In the past 16 years, 23 police employees have killed themselves in Victoria.

In an attempt to find out why, a review was commissioned to look at strengths and shortcomings within the police force.

Released on Monday, the published review found a serious lack of attention to officers' wellbeing, and a "suck it up" culture that was leaving staff untreated for post traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts.

The report's authors interviewed 450 staff about their experiences. This is some of what they had to say.

If you need help in a crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14. For further information about depression contact beyondBlue on 1300224636 or talk to your GP, local health professional or someone you trust.
