A surfer is fighting for his life following a shark attack at a Falcon beach near Mandurah on Tuesday afternoon.

Mandurah Mail reporter Nathan Hondros told Radio 6PR that the young man had been pulled out of the water at around 4pm while surfing with friends.

"The gentleman was on the beach by the time we got there," he said.

"Ambulance crews were trying to resuscitate him by the looks of it... he had lost a leg from what looked like above the knee, so it was quite a savage attack."

"It's very desperate scenes at the moment."

The beach is a popular surfing spot, with around 20 people believed to have been in the water at the time of the attack.

It was initially reported than the surfer was a 17-year-old boy, but is now believed to be aged 29.

After receiving CPR, the victim was rushed to Peel Health Campus at around 5pm. At 6:30pm, an RAC rescue helicopter was preparing to transfer the man to Royal Perth Hospital.

The City of Marundah has closed part of the beach and the Department of Fisheries has been advised.

More to come.
