A female diver who was killed by a shark in Western Australia on Sunday has been identified as Edith Cowan University lecturer Doreen Collyer.

The 60-year-old academic was diving about off the coast Mindarie north of Perth on Sunday morning when the shark, possibly a great white, mauled her.

Collyer was retrieved from the water by her diving partner, a 43-year-old man, but died of her injuries at a nearby boat ramp.

Police said her injuries were "apparent and severe" and appeared to be consistent with a shark attack, however the cause of the injuries are not confirmed.

Witnesses confirmed a sighting and reported the shark to be longer than their 5.3 metre fishing boat.

The Department of Fisheries is treating the incident as a "possible shark attack", and a vessel will attend to assess the situation.

The City of Wannero has closed beaches on either side of the Mindarie boat ramp, south from Claytons Beach and north to Quinns beach.

The woman's death comes just two days after another WA person, surfer Ben Gerring, died from his injuries after a shark attack just south of Perth, at Mandurah.
