Poor light has forced emergency services to suspend a search for a man missing in the water at Bondi beach.

Police said the the search would resume at first light.

Earlier, authorities scoured the ocean off the famous Sydney beach from the air for the man who vanished into the sea on Monday afternoon.

Witnesses told NewsCorp Australia they saw a man "wearing board shorts" in a roped-off area close to the heavy surf.

Some reports claim the man was swept off rocks while others say he may have jumped into the rough sea and then been carried away.

Bondi lifeguard Bruce Hopkins told Fairfax Media that the person had tried to jump into the water from the rocks at South Bondi.

Bondi has been closed to swimmers and surfers today due to the wild weather.

The search comes after beachside areas in Sydney were slammed by huge waves and high tides caused by the monster storm on the weekend.

The massive swell has impacted beachfront homes along Sydney's coastline and was so damaging that Coogee surf club is now at risk of collapsing into the sea.
