It is yet to be determined whether the body is that of the man who went missing off Bondi Beach on Monday.

The body of a man was found close to Sydney's Bondi Beach on Saturday morning.

Just after 8am the body, which has not yet been identified, was located 450m east of the beach.

Police were alerted and sent a vessel to the area to recover the body.

Inquiries are being conducted by police into the cause of death.

Forensic examination will be carried out to determine whether the body is that of 28-year-old Endicott Ackerman who went missing off Bondi Beach on June 6.

The American student was seen jumping off the rocks near the Icebergs at South Bondi on Monday afternoon.

Police were told by witnesses that Ackerman was "in distress" in the water before disappearing.
