Shocking. Just shocking. Just so utterly infuriating and stupid. This handball by Peruvian forward Raul Ruidiaz against Brazil in the Copa America was so brazen and obvious, it's impossible to believe five officials all missed it. But they did. Watch and weep.
We begin our long weekend sports wrap with the disturbing news that Brazil has been knocked out of the Copa America at the group stage thanks to this howler of a decision. A draw and they would have progressed to the knockout phase of the biggest football tournament in the Americas.
But no. Football referees have no access to slow motion replays and that was that. The cheeky Peruvian even grinned after scoring.
Meanwhile in the other major football tournament on the planet right now, this just happened.
Italy beat Belgium 2-0 in the tournament which thus far has gained more headlines for fighting than football. Because "The Beautiful Game" has some really ugly sides to it but can still be beautiful too.
In the AFL, the GWS Giants beating the Sydney Swans on Sunday night was a highly entertaining night out. It was also very profitable for one fan. Click the link in the tweet below. Just do it. There you'll see a GWS fan winning himself $100,000 for pulling off the most impossible kick at three quarter time.
Hilariously, the kick made everyone so excited that Giants coach Leon Cameron admitted he couldn't keep his players' attention in the team huddle at the break.
In other AFL news, the Demons beat Collingwood to just about end the Magpies' season, while Geelong stopped its mini-slump to inflict the second loss of the season on the Kangaroos. The Kangas still lead the ladder after the Swans slipped up.
The NRL threw up a tough, tense encounter between the Cowboys and Sharks in what may well be a preview of this year's grand final. The Sharkies got home 13-10 to make it ten straight wins.
The Panthers stormed home to beat Manly 31-24, with Matt Moylan playing well enough to retain his NSW Blues fullback jersey for Origin II despite the availability of Tigers star James Tedesco. Pretty much everything was saying stuff like the respected commentator below but NSW coach Laurie Daley and his selectorial panel had other ideas.
The rugby union international season kicked off with England beating the Wallabies 39-28 in Brisbane. England had swept through Europe's best before coming down under, so they were expected to be a force. But Australia was its own worst enemy, conceding too many penalties. David Pocock fractured an eye socket and will miss the rest of the series.
There's an interesting cricket match happening right now, with the West Indies chasing Australia's decent total of 7/265, in which Usman Khawaja was run out for 98. We'll keep you posted. Meanwhile Australia beat South Africa over the weekend, which is never a terrible thing.
In American sports, game 5 of the NBA Finals is today, with reigning champs the Golden State Warriors leading 3-1. They'll take to the court today without power forward Draymond Green, who has been suspended after a dust-up with LeBron James.
LeBron was playing it cool, unwilling to buy into the controversy.
But the take-home moment from the long weekend was THAT handball. Interestingly, Greece won the 2004 Euro Championships in what proved to be a wonderful tone-setter for a successful Athens Olympics that everyone had feared would be terrible.
Here's hoping Brazil's moment of agony is not a bad omen for Rio.
