A woman has been stabbed multiple times at a home in Sydney's west on Tuesday night, leaving her with serious injuries.

The 29-year-old was treated by paramedics for more than an hour after police say she was stabbed by a 42-year-old man, who is known to her.

Officers were called to the house on Garswood Road in Glenmore Park at 5.40pm, where they found the woman with wounds to her neck and abdomen.

The Ambulance helicopter landed nearby for its crew to offer their assistance, before the woman was taken by road to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

Later on Tuesday night, the hospital listed her condition as critical.

Police set up a crime scene at the home and searched for the man who allegedly stabbed the woman.

He was found several kilometres away at Jamisontown at 6pm with significant injuries, which police believe to be self-inflicted.

The man was also taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition.
