A 2-year-old boy has reportedly been dragged by an alligator into a lagoon near the Disney World resort in Orlando Florida.

A search is currently underway for the child who is believed to have been taken by the gator into the Seven Seas Lagoon, near Disney's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa, on Tuesday night US time.

The Orlando Sentinel reports that emergency services have been searching for the child in the lagoon but haven't found him and that it is now being called a "recovery effort".

Authorities told the newspaper that the boy's family was on holiday in the area and were "relaxing on the shoreline" when the attack took place.

It's not yet clear if the family was a guest at the hotel.

It is reported that the father of the boy entered the water and tried to get the child back from the alligator, but was not successful.

Authorities told the Orlando Sentinel that the child had not yet been found early Wednesday morning US time.

The hotel is a luxury resort owned by Disney.
