Tim Wilson Was The Second Politician To Cop Vile Homophobic Abuse This Week

And the second one to rise above it.

On Thursday Greens candidate Jason Ball wasn't the only one to call out homophobic abuse on social media.

Former Australian Human Rights Commissioner Tim Wilson, who is now running as the Liberal Candidate for Goldstein in Victoria, also posted on Facebook about his "second favourite comment of the day".

It happened to be from a woman who said she planned on voting for the Liberal candidate, until she found out Wilson was openly gay.

This is what Wilson had to say:

Wilson told Fairfax media "my reaction was actually of pride". He wished the woman a good day.

"I've always believed that part of my life's purpose is to ensure that I am the last generation that has to put up with this stuff. I'm taking it so others won't have to," Wilson said.

Earlier on Thursday Greens candidate in the Victorian seat of Higgins, Jason Ball, posted a heartfelt message hitting back at the vandals writing 'fag' above his campaign posters.

The Greens candidate, who was also the first openly gay AFL player, said his post was to encourage LGBTI people to speak up "in the face of bigotry". You can read the entire post here.

While two Victorian candidates fight against the abuse, the 2016 election holds one very special historical moment for the LGBTI community in Brisbane, where the two candidates running for the major parties are both openly gay.

Labor candidate Pat O'Neill and Liberal candidate Trevor Evans are fighting it out in the Queensland capital.

O'Neill spent almost two decades in the armed forces before stepping into politics and Evans is a former chief-of-staff to Immigration Minister Peter Dutton.
