Australian Student Allegedly Raped On Holiday In Croatia: Report

The attacked is said to have happened on the popular island of Hvar.

The Croatian island where the incident took place is popular with tourists.

An Australian student has allegedly been raped while visiting a popular Croatian island.

The 21-year-old student is believed to have been attacked by a British man, in his mid 20s, on the island of Hvar on Thursday.

NewsCorp Australia reports that the victim left the island on a ferry to the mainland soon after and later testified in court in the Adriatic port of Split.

She has since left the county, NewsCorp reports.

The alleged attacker was arrested in the regional centre of Split.

Authorities have reportedly refused to provide details of the attack or where the woman was from because of the nature of the incident.

The attack comes after 3 Melbourne men earlier this year pleaded guilty to pack raping a 17-year-old backpacker in Croatia.

That incident sparked outrage when the men dodged a trial by paying $30,000 to the victim.

Dylan Djohan, 23, Ashwin Kumar, 23, and Waleed Latif, 21 were given a 1-year prison sentence, which was then downgraded to a 5-year good behaviour bond, Fairfax Media reported at the time.

Their convictions in Croatia reportedly won't appear in the Australian justice system and they won't be placed on the national Sex Offenders Register.
