Controversial Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been involved in a terse exchange with a journalist after beating Germany's Dustin Brown at Wimbledon.

Kyrgios, the 15th seed at the tournament, copped a warning for audible obscenity from the match umpire at the start of the third set after complaining about a decision. He ended up taking out the fixture 6-7(3-7), 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The on-court incident flared up at the post-match press conference when a journalist queried Kyrgios about his behaviour in the 5-set victory.

"What did I say to the umpire today?" he's quoted by the ABC as saying.

"Have you never said a swear word before? Have you never said a swear word in your life?" he also said at one point.

The full exchange can be read here.

Brown has reportedly jumped to the Australian's defence, saying he didn't have any issues with Kyrgios' actions.

The overnight incident comes after Kyrgios was embroiled in controversy last year at Wimbledon for allegedly "tanking" in a match against Richard Gasquet.

Last month, Kyrgios withdrew from the Rio Olympics after a spat with the AOC's chef de mission Kitty Chiller.

When he pulled out of the games, Kyrgios blamed the AOC for treating him unfairly. He said representing Australia had been a "dream" of his since childhood, but it was clear the AOC had "other plans".
