As part of HuffPost's “Reclaim” project, HuffPost Taste will focus the entire month of July on simple ways you can reduce food waste in your own home.
While you could probably just eat the entire strawberry, like some folks do with whole apples -- leaves and all -- most people don't. We understand why you wouldn't want to eat the leaves, even though they are entirely edible. But there's still a lot of good berry left behind that's attached to the tops. Don't throw them out! Instead, make delicious and refreshing strawberry-top water out of them.
Next time you devour a pint of summer-fresh strawberries, place the tops in a pitcher, fill it with water, cover and refrigerate for at least an hour. The strawberry tops will give the water a nice pink tint, and when served over ice with a wedge of lemon, it basically tastes like what strawberry lemonade has always hoped to be.
It takes minimal effort and the rewards are twofold. First, you get to drink water that tastes like strawberries -- yum! -- and second, you're getting more mileage out of your summer berries. This of course stretches your dollar and minimizes food waste -- we'll cheers our strawberry-top water to that!
