On his first day back at work on Monday, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull received an awkward reminder of just how fragile his job can be.

During a photo shoot to promote the fact he was back at the helm of the nation, Turnbull offered the young daughter of press gallery photographer Lukas Coch the chance to have her picture taken with him.

"Do you want to sit on my desk?" the PM asked.

"I've met lots of Prime Ministers," little Mila offered.

"I've met Tony Abbott."

Mila is seven, meaning she has been around long enough to see prime ministers Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, Rudd again, Tony Abbott and Turnbull. Take a breath.

Turnbull grinned then replied: "Oh good! Then you've met lots of prime ministers then!"

If you watch the video closely, you might be forgiven for thinking the PM said the next bit through gritted teeth.

"Very good. Very good. Well, it's great to see you."
