A driver accused of running down a man in his car before allegedly bashing him with a brick will face court on Sunday, charged with attempted murder.

The 54-year-old victim remains in a critical condition in Westmead Hospital after being attacked in the front yard of a house in Shalvey, in Sydney's west, on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency services found the man unconscious just after 2pm when they were called to Westward Avenue, where a blue Kia had mounted the kerb and partially demolished a brick fence.

A 40-year-old man, believed to be known to the victim, was arrested at the scene and underwent mandatory testing at Mount Druitt Hospital. He has been charged with attempted murder and was refused bail, to face Parramatta Bail Court on Sunday.

Lina Vakatau, a neighbour who witnessed the incident, told Nine News the driver got out of the vehicle, "grabbed a brick and bashed up his head". The victim had been "screaming [their] head off, just [saying], 'Stop it, stop it'."

Police spoke with a number of witnesses at the scene and have appealed to anyone with information to contact Mount Druitt Police Station.
