The Maltidas have fallen just short of a stunning Rio upset in their fixture against Germany, securing a 2-2 draw with the global soccer powerhouse.
The draw means the Aussies now face a tough road ahead to progress through the pool stage and will next face Zimbabwe in 3 days time.
Things got off to a cracking start for the Maltidas when Sam Kerr found the back of the net early in the first half and Caitlin Foord tapped home a cross in the 45th minute, with the Aussies taking a 2-1 lead into the break.
The Matildas led for much of the second stanza until Germany equalised with just 2 minutes on the clock through a heartbreaking own goal off the arm of Australian captain Clare Polkinghorne.
The result means for the Matildas to progress they need Canada to prevail over Germany in the final pool game and make up a 7 goal deficit to the Germans when they meet Zimbabwe, according to Fox Sports.
The draw comes after the Matildas' Olympic campaign got off to a horror start with a 2-0 loss to Canada.
Maltida's coach Alen Stajcic made 3 changes to that team for today's fixture but the result will be a big hit to Australia's chances of winning a medal in Rio.
