A British man who was severely injured in a fatal stabbing attack at a north Queensland backpackers hostel last week has died in hospital.

Thomas Jackson has been labeled a hero after intervening in the horrific incident during which he suffered numerous stab wounds to his head and leg.

He was trying to save Mia Ayliffe-Chung, who died in the ordeal at the Home Hill premises, south of Townsville, last Tuesday night.

Jackson, 30, had been fighting for life ever since the attack that took place in the north Queensland sugar cane growing town.

Following the news of Jackson's death, Queensland police said they would upgrade charges against a 29-year-old man man already before the courts.

Last week, French tourist, Smail Ayad, 29 was charged over Ayliffe-Chung's death and is also accused of the attempted murder of 2 men who tried to intervene in the attack, and with assaulting 12 police officers since his arrest.

Ayliffe-Chung's mother today released a heart-wrenching blog for The Independent about losing her daughter in the attack.
