School Apologises For Allowing Student To Dress Up As Adolf Hitler

'Book Week? It's Australia. We need to talk.'

An Alice Springs school has apologised for awarding a child who dressed as Hitler as part of the festivities.

In front of Jewish students visiting from Melbourne's Biliak College.

Roger Herbert, the headmaster at St Philip's College, told 783 ABC Radio that it was a regrettable incident.

"We got them together and apologised and they were fantastic, absolutely fantastic, and accepting," he said.

"In a busy school, this student did go a respected staff member said 'is this OK?' and the staff member said 'yes'."

In a follow up statement issued on Friday afternoon, the school said itwas "an innocent mistake by a teacher who is a respected, honourable and lovely person who got it wrong on the day."

"The student involved has an interest in history and politics and did the right thing by getting permission for his "book week" costume," the statement said.

"The school apologises unreservedly for any offence that has been caused. We have been in touch with the principal of the visiting students who were present on the day and they have accepted our apology."

The school said it is reviewing its policies on events to ensure "nothing like this can happen again."

Support and assistance is being provided to the teacher, the student, and their family, the statement said.

The news report comes just over a week after a Perth primary school reportedly apologised after a student was awarded first prize at a costume party for dressing as Adolf Hitler.

It also comes after a mother painted her son brown to emulate AFL player Nic Naitanui -- who is his idol -- for a Book Week event.

Shortly after, a Perth Father dressed his son as West Coast Eagle Ben Cousins, complete with white powder on his nose.
