The legendary broadcaster's career spanned almost 50 years.

Iconic Australian broadcaster Norman May has died at the age of 88.

May started his career at the ABC in 1958 and covered a staggering 11 Olympic Games through to his retirement in 1984.

An Australian Sports Hall of Fame member and a member of the Order of Australia, May passed away on Sunday, with his long-time ABC colleague Drew Morphett confirming the sad news on Twitter.

May, an avid fan of sports especially cricket, remains well known to this day for his call of "GOLD, GOLD for Australia, GOLD" in the 4x100m medley in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Former ABC colleague and broadcaster Tracey Holmes paid tribute to the man known as "nugget".

"The amazing thing about Norman was that he had an encyclopaedic mind. He could just pull facts and figures out of anywhere," she told the ABC.
