Beyoncé left the Emmys empty-handed on Sunday night. “Lemonade” had actually been nominated for two awards ― one for Outstanding Variety Special, another for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Special ― but it wasn’t until presenter Laverne Cox announced that Beyoncé and Kahlil Joseph had lost out on the latter award that the real visceral anger came out.

And when it came out, it came out loud and hard, with some of it jokingly aimed at the winners, Thomas Kail and Alex Rudzinski, who directed “Grease: Live.” And what else would you expect? After all, Beyonce really is the closest thing this great country has to a queen.
