One Nation Senator Malcolm Roberts cannot explain how Australia is being "swamped by Muslims" and believes The Project co-host Waleed Aly is condoning Islamic terrorism.

In a trainwreck interview on The Project on Wednesday night, journalist Hamish MacDonald asked Roberts to please explain how many Muslims were migrating Down Under.

"I don't know that. We have an adviser who goes into that," Roberts said defensively to the panel, which was missing Waleed Aly unfortunately (or fortunately).

"Our culture is being swamped is what we're discussing."

The comments come after a poll today revealed almost half of Australians would ban Muslim migration. You can read more about that here.

The One Nation Senator argued there is a higher percentage of Australians following the Buddhist faith over Islam, yet Buddhist terrorism is rarely making headlines.

When MacDonald jumped back in to ask Roberts what the fastest growing faith in Australia was, the One Nation Senator admitted he also didn't know that fact.

"Don't you think you ought to know that before you say this in public?" MacDonald asked.

"I don't think we need to know that. We need to focus on whether Islam is an ideology or a religion," Roberts replied.

"It's clear in our mind it's an ideology and doesn't fit with our culture. It disrespects women. Think of the ways gays are treated in the Middle East."

The One Nation Senator went on to attribute the Coalition's ability to raise the humanitarian refugee intake to Pauline Hanson's campaign in the 1990s to 'stop the boats'.

That's when things got really wild.

Panellist Pete Helliar asked Roberts whether all Muslims, including Waleed, should be deported or "relegated to breakfast TV in Syria?"

"No, but it would certainly be nice if Waleed condemned and didn't condone Islamic terrorism, wouldn't that be a good start?" Roberts replied.

MacDonald then clarified that the second fastest growing religion is Hinduism, not Islam, and topped off the interview with the last word.

"Senator - what's his name?"
