Paul Jennings Has Released A New Book And We're Excited

He is as weird as he is wonderful.

It all started with a strange family and a lighthouse.

He is the man behind the theme song that either excites you or haunts you (or, a bit of both).

Either way, that tune is catchy and Paul Jennings' writing is ripe with nostalgia.

Almost 30 years since we became lost in the bizarre world of Round The Twist, Paul Jennings -- now in his 70s -- is back.

This week, he released a new children's novel, The Unforgettable What's His Name. At its centre is a boy who tries not to be seen -- until, like all of his novels and short stories, everything changes.

"Some kids want to be noticed and that's okay," Jennings said. "But the world is changing in such a way that it is more and more difficult to get by if you are shy.

"I hope that this book tells the quiet people that their lives can be exciting and successful."

Here, here.

To celebrate, The Huffington Post Australia has compiled some of his greatest and most nostalgic literary moments to whisk you back to your childhood.

There was the Un! Series

First, it was Unreal! and Unbelievable! Then came Uncanny! and Unbearable!

Jennings wrote four series of short stories that featured ordinary kids in the most extraordinary circumstances. These are the greatest collection of coming-to-age stories to combine everything from fart jokes and vomit with sexuality and social awareness -- at a time in a kid's life when they may just need it most.

And then there was Wicked.

What happens when two crazy literary masters combine forces? Wild wackiness, that's what. We couldn't be more grateful (and slightly perturbed) by the weird stories Jennings and Morris Gleitzman came up with.

The Gizmo came and went, and then it came again.

And now we're here.

The Unforgettable What's His Name was released by Allen & Unwin on October 26.
