Two-time Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Kerrin McEvoy kept it light during his interview following his win aboard Almandin in the 2016 Melbourne Cup, revealing to Channel 7 he hoped his wife "didn't cheer too hard, [and] pop the baby out".

McEvoy and his wife, Kathy, are expecting their fourth child any day now and interestingly, Kathy happens to be the sister of last year's Melbourne Cup winner, Michelle Payne.

"It's so exciting. My sister Kathy is due at home to have their fourth baby. Hopefully she's held on because it's ready to come any time soon. She'll be so excited. What a finish," Michelle Payne said.

"Kerrin is such an amazing rider. What a great ride it was."

South Australian-born McEvoy confirmed to journalists the baby was due next Monday.

"Funny when I spoke to [the horse's owner] Lloyd [Williams] the other day he said 'When is the baby due?' and I said 'don't worry I'll be there on Tuesday regardless of the situation'," McEvoy said.

"Kathy was aware of that. Great to have it done. They'll be thrilled."

McEvoy last won the Melbourne Cup aboard Brew in 2000. The 16-year gap is the longest between winning rides in Melbourne Cup history. He showed a great sense of perspective in his official Melbourne Cup acceptance speech.

"My wife Kathy has been handling the brunt of the workload with the kids in Sydney while I've been down here riding winners in Melbourne. So I'd like to thank you, my lovely wife."
