A Scandinavian backpacker is recovering in hospital after a terrifying encounter with a freshwater crocodile in remote Western Australia.

The 27-year-old Danish man, named in media reports as Johnny Bonde, was bitten by the croc in WA's far north after falling on top of the animal as he tried to take a photo.

He told Perth Now he was trying to snap a pic of the 2.5m creature when he slipped and fell on the crocodile at Lake Kununurra.

The Dane admitted his injuries were caused by his own stupidity.

"If somebody body slammed me at night, I would be angry too," he told the newspaper.

"I was sliding down the bank and then fell on top of him really," Bonde added from his hospital bed. "It grabbed my arm, shook me for a bit then let go."

Bonde was taken to hospital and treated for deep cuts in his harm following the attack. He's expected to make a full recovery.
