Be careful what you wish for.

John Oliver once goaded reality TV star Donald Trump into running for president, and it seems as if his words have come back to haunt him.

The “Last Week Tonight” host confessed all on Sunday.

It is frankly hard to believe that there was a time when people thought a Trump candidacy would be funny,” the comedian said, before playing a “Daily Show” clip from 2013 in which he urged Trump to run for the White House.

“I will personally write you a campaign check now, on behalf of your country, which does not want you to be president, but badly wants you to run,” he said.

Oliver now admits he was very wrong. He also apologized for predicting that the Chicago Cubs would never win a World Series, and revealed how his errors should highlight the importance of voting on Tuesday.

Check it out in the clip above.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.
