The Presidential Cookie Poll Let Us Down This Year

But Hillary's recipe won't.

The Family Circle Presidential Cookie Poll claims that the winner of its poll is a good indicator of who will win the election. Before last night, it had successfully predicted five out of the last six presidencies. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out in the poll’s favor in 2016.

The election is over and for many of us the results were a shock. Donald Trump took Hillary Clinton with a sweeping victory. Being the great politician that she was, our almost first female president, Clinton has left in her epic legacy a small gem to help us cope with this news ― and with the uncertain future ahead.

This recipe has won not one, not two, but three times when submitted to the Family Circle Presidential Cookie Poll. Clinton was the reason the poll started in the first place, back in 1992. Family Circle invited her and Barbara Bush to the bake off, and it was a way for Hillary to make amends with housewives she offended with her infamous quote about baking cookies: “I suppose I could’ve stayed home and baked cookies and had teas, but what I decided to do was fulfill my profession which I entered before my husband was in public life.”

She really did make it up to everyone, because these cookies are good. They’re not just chocolate chip cookies, they’re oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. (The Clintons know that no one wants a raisin in their oatmeal cookies, as John Oliver so eloquently pointed out when he compared Trump to a pile of raisins.)

While Clinton’s cookies far outshone Melania Trump’s star cookies made with egg whites and sour cream, they did not land her the role as our commander in chief.

Luckily, we have Clinton’s cookie recipe to help us get through this recent disappointment. For today, and the next four years. Here they are:

The Clinton’s Family Chocolate Chip Cookies

  • 1 1/2 cups unsifted all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1 cup solid vegetable shortening

  • 1 cup firmly packed light-brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 cups rolled old-fashioned oats

  • 1 package(12 ounces) semisweet chocolate chip

Heat oven to 350 degree F. Grease two large baking sheets.

Combine flour, salt and baking soda on a sheet of parchment or waxed paper.

In a large bowl, beat together the shortening, sugars and vanilla with an electric mixer until creamy. Add eggs, beating until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in flour mixture and rolled oats. Stir in chocolate chips.

Drop batter by well-rounded teaspoonfuls onto prepared sheets.

Bake at 350 degree F for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden. Cool cookies on sheets on wire racks for two minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool completely.
