The Weeknd Just Broke The Record For Most Spotify Streams In A Day

Just five days after Canadian rapper the Weeknd released his third studio album, "Starboy", the 26-year-old has gone and smashed the record for the artist with the most streams in a single day on Spotify.

The streaming service confirmed the news in a statement on Wednesday, though did not release any figures on the new benchmark.

Republic Records Chairman & Co-Founder, Monte Lipman said, "Spotify's continued support of The Weeknd has now reached historic proportions and also reinforces the tremendous growth of global streaming."

It's been a breakout year for the Weeknd (real name: Abel Makkonen Tesfaye) who scored two Grammys and a total of eight honours at the Billboard Music Awards for his record "Beauty Behind the Madness" which has sold more than three million copies.

The record's namesake lead single 'Starboy', a collaboration between the Weeknd and French electronic duo Daft Punk has been enjoying a number one spot on the Spotify's Australia Chart for weeks now totalling 198,502 Plays per day.

Next week, the Toronto-born artist will perform at the Victoria's Secret Show, while his ex-girlfriend, model Bella Hadid is due to walk at the show.
