Christmas seems to be particularly hard on elderly men.

Happy tears are good for you, and given Christmas is the season for giving, we're about to give you a big, healthy, snotty cry-fest.

A warning: If you're on public transport, at work or anywhere where public tears aren't ideal, save this story until later.

Let's start with this new Polish ad 'English for beginners' by auction site Allegro that will make you feel things.

While we're on the topic of old men making us cry, this German ad 'Heimkommen' for supermarket Edeka will make pretty much make any busy 30-something feel really bad.

Then there's this annual Spanish lottery ad that's, well, if you haven't cried yet, it might do it for you.

You picking up a theme yet? This John Lewis ad has once again employed an old man blessed with the type of kindly face that can make us cry, and then puts him all alone on the moon.

I'm starting to feel a little bit emotionally manipulated. Are we all really that predictable that an elderly, lonely man tugs at our cry strings?

How about Apple's latest Christmas video? Surely they won't employ a lonely old man in a particularly pathetic situation...

It seems the tried and tested Christmas formula for making us cry is: Old man - friends and family + heartwarming interpersonal connection = tearful spending at department stores.

And isn't that what Christmas is all about?

Well that, and making sure elderly male actors stay employed.
