Every year Billboard’s Women in Music ceremony gathers the most empowering female artists in one room to celebrate women who’ve made an impact on the music industry and beyond.
Madonna, Shania Twain, Halsey, Alessia Cara, Maren Morris and Kesha ― who delivered a moving speech about her “roller-coaster ride of ups and downs” this year ― were among the honorees at the 2016 event in New York City on Friday.
The Huffington Post and MAKERS caught up with some of these unapologetic stars and others on the red carpet to talk about the importance of supporting each other in an industry that too often diminishes women’s voices.
“The trick is staying true to yourself at the same time,” said Twain, who received the Icon of the Year award. “Not being a follower, but a leader.”
