Along with the scent of fresh pine needles, the taste of turkey and the wonder of living your life surrounded by fairy lights for an entire month, Christmas also brings some classic movies.
They're not just any movies either, but movies you've likely grown up with.
They've served as a trusty form of family entertainment for years and somehow, never seem to get old. Watched Love, Actually 13 times already? Who cares! Each year you take something different from it. And that, friends, is what makes a brilliant Christmas flick.
Ahead, we've compiled the timeless films that deserve to make their merry way into your lounge room this year. BYO choccy Roses.
1. Bridget Jones' Diary (2001)
The perfectly imperfect British rom-com has all the ingredients for heart-warming viewing. From this scene, to the one where Mark tells Bridget he likes her 'just as you are', just try and find a more likable protagonist. Oh, and let's not forget the sensational soundtrack.
2. Bad Santa (2003)
A black comedy practically made for profanity-loving folk and definitely one to watch once the kids have gone to bed. Billy Bob Thornton plays a whiskey-guzzling department store Santa who makes an unlikely friend in an 8-year-old kid. Totally un-PC but hilarious all the same.
3. While You Were Sleeping (1995)
It was the rom-com that took Sandra Bullock from Speed to one of Hollywood's leading ladies. It's also full of every '90s cliche you could think of: mum jeans, fringes, oversized denim jackets and Peter Gallagher 10 years before to The OC. A story of love 'at second sight' and proof that a female protagonist with disastorous fashion can too, find love without going through a Miss Congeniality-style makeover.
4. Love, Actually (2003)
When a scene has practically no words, and this much heart, there's got to be some kind of magic at play. Supernatural talent or not, the entire cast from Keira Knightley and Emma Thompson to Colin Firth and Alan Rickman is a big reason why this film is a mainstay at Christmas.
5. Miracle On 34th Street (1947)
Forget the remake and go for the original. This charming classic delivers everything you could ever want in a Christmas film: snowy New York, the befriending of a stranger and proof that sometimes, a little faith is all it takes to witness a miracle.
6. Serendipity (2001)
Imagine meeting someone you just click with, parting ways and leaving another meeting up to complete chance. Excruciating, no? Well it's the enduring theme of this movie starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale and if it wasn't so deliciously sweet and romantic (read: light and slightly corny) it would almost be too agonising to handle.
7. It's A Wonderful Life (1946)
You wouldn't think the story of a suicidal man would make for a Christmas staple, yet the legendary director Frank Capra does it seamlessly. Jimmy Stewart plays the role of George Bailey, who is struggling to see the light until he meets an angel -- Clarence -- who shows him his worth. It's raw, otherworldly and incredibly moving.
