Gigi Hadid isn’t just at the top of her professional game ― she’s also a role model when it comes to handling overwhelming bouts of stress.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show star recently opened up about going through periods of anxiety at Reebok Women’s #PerfectNever event in NYC, Glamour reported. She also revealed how she calms her mind in those moments.
“[I] feel almost suffocated by the world and the world’s opinions,” Hadid said. “Sometimes I have to literally sit myself down and be like, ‘You are a good person. You go into everything you do with a good heart and with good intentions. And sometimes you have hard days, and sometimes people judge you for things that they’re just guessing by seeing in a picture.’”
Her method is backed up by research which shows that being kind to yourself might ease specific types of anxiety. While Hadid’s mantras are specific to her experience, self-compassion statements may help when your mental well-being is threatened.
Hadid was joined at the event by a few famous friends, including Lena Dunham, who praised the model’s commitment to keeping her anxiety in check and boldly speaking out about it. She also discussed the added difficulty of dealing with well-being in the public eye.
“The fact is, that’s too much pressure for anybody,” Dunham said. “There’s so much stigma for women around mental health care and around taking care of ourselves.”
Nearly one in five American adults will experience a psychological health issue in a given year, but society still projects the notion that these conditions are shameful.
