A rogue seal has escaped for a walk on Boxing Day morning in Tasmania.

'Twas the day after Christmas, when all through Tasmanian houses not a creature was stirring. All were nestled all snug in their beds with dreams of their Christmas dinners still dancing in their heads.

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter and a large seal on the loose gave a car an almighty batter.

That's right -- you read correctly. There's a seal on the loose in the suburbs of Tasmania.

Tasmania police and Parks & Wildlife are currently pursuing the large animal that has escaped and made its way into the Launceston suburb of Newstead in the state's north-east on Monday.

Mr 'Lou-Seal', as nicknamed by the police was found on Penquite Road and didn't take lightly to a resident's car, deciding to hop on top and make its presence known.

The seal was secured after 8AM on Boxing Day by police and tranquilised at around 11AM. It was collected and removed by Parks & Wildlife officers at around 11:30AM and will now be checked for any medical issues before being relocated and released.

No word has come regarding the damages the animal made to the resident's car.
