Virgin Australia Airlines passengers looking to fly out of Sydney Airport have faced extraordinarily long queues on Tuesday morning after the carrier was swamped with a post-holiday period rush.

Travellers arrived at Sydney Airport's domestic terminal to find Virgin check-in staff were so overwhelmed with early morning flyers, queues for flights had stretched out of the terminal doors.

A spokesperson for Virgin Australia told the Huffington Post Australia: "Today is one of the busiest days of the year for travellers returning from holidays which has resulted in delays at our check-in counters at Sydney Airport this morning,"

"Each of our check-in counters are fully staffed and we are working hard to have guests on their way as quickly as possible."

Affected customers took to social media to vent their frustrations at what one flyer deemed the "opportunity to experience the world's longest check-in line."

The Virgin Australia spokesperson also told Huff Post Australia that check-in lines have returned to their normal state with services now running smoothly.

The delays come a day after travellers at Melbourne Airport were faced with a similar problem as holiday queues flooded the terminal.
