South Australia is set for its third straight day of blistering heat, with the mercury tipped to reach 40 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state on Saturday.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasts the temperature to hit 41C in Adelaide and 43C at Port Augusta, making it the third consecutive day of 40 degree-plus conditions.

BOM predicts a shower or thunderstorm late this afternoon and evening along with strong winds.

BOM senior forecaster Tina Donaldson told the ABC that parts of the state would experience extreme heat through the day, but that a respite would come in the evening.

"By the early hours of Sunday morning we should see some of that cooler air start to come through so we're forecasting a morning minimum for Sunday of just 20 degrees," Donaldson is quoted as saying.

The Riverland and Murraylands are predicted to experience highs of 42C while most of South Australia will range between 37C and 41C, according to BoM.

It has a fire weather warning in place for for the West Coast, Eastern Eyre Peninsula, Lower Eyre Peninsula, Flinders, Mid North, Mount Lofty Ranges, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Murraylands, Upper South East and Lower South East districts.

Meanwhile, Canberra locals are also in for a sweltering weekend, with temperatures possibly hitting 35 degrees on Sunday and 36 on Monday.

BOM predicts the warmest days of summer so far for the national capital and is tipping to mercury to hit seven degrees above January's average highest temperature.
