An Australian mother and three adult sons have reportedly been found after failing to return home at the Nozawa Onsen ski resort in Japan yesterday.

Japanese police believed the family was missing somewhere near the 1,600m summit of the mountain, which fell below freezing temperature last night.

Police also reportedly said a relative saw a post on Facebook from the family calling for help, according to the ABC.

Trip provider Nozawa Holidays said the family had been found on top of the mountain, near where police were searching.

"Everyone is very relieved to hear," the Facebook post said.

"A big thank you to the hard working team at Ski Patrol and a strong message to everyone on the slopes at the moment to be very careful with more heavy snow again overnight.

Overnight temperatures dropped to -10 degrees Celsius at the ski resort, which is near the west coast of Japan's main island and has received heavy snowfalls in recent weeks.
