New US first lady Melania Trump has channeled Jackie Kennedy by choosing one of America's most iconic designers for her Inauguration Day duties.

The new first lady stepped out for the ceremonies in a Ralph Lauren baby-blue jacket and matching dress in an eye catching ensemble for the historic day.

"With the historic swearing-in of her husband, Donald J. Trump, as the 45th President of the United States, the First Lady-elect will become America's new First Lady wearing an American designer who transformed American fashion, Ralph Lauren," a spokesperson for Trump announced this morning, according to The Telegraph UK.

"It was important to us to uphold the tradition of creating iconic American style for this moment," Ralph Lauren reportedly said in a statement to the New York Times.

Ivanka Trump, who has her own fashion line, donned an Oscar de la Renta white pantsuit whileTiffany Trump wore a white doubled breasted coast over a white dress.

Donald Trump's vanquished foe, Hillary Clinton, also chose Ralph Lauren, wearing a cream coat and white pantsuit.

Melania Trump's Ralph Lauren outfit was said to be custom designed. It was worn with long matching gloves, stiletto shoes, and her long brown hair swept up in a loose bun. The ensemble had a 1960s throwback feel that inspired the comparisons with Kennedy, wife of the 35th American president.
