Victoria Police have confirmed the human remains found at Mount Macedon on Monday are that of missing mother Karen Ristevski.

Investigators have said the results of forensic testing of a badly decomposed body found in bushland north of Melbourne identified the 47-year-old mother.

Ristevski was last seen at her home address on Oakley Drive in Avondale Heights at about 10AM on June 29, 2016.

Her remains were found by a member of the public on Monday in bushland at Mount Macedon just after midday. Police conducted a line search on Tuesday and are now appealing for anyone that may have been walking along the dirt track off Loch Road or anyone that may have seen any vehicles to contact them.

Investigators are also calling for anyone who may have been in the Mount Macedon area in June last year with any photos or video footage to help them in their investigations.

Police had previously searched for Ristevski in the area surrounding the location of the remains that were found on Monday.

A witness, who arrived at the scene, told police he saw a man with a shovel before the discovery, the Herald Sun reports.

The witness allegedly joked "What did you do to the body?" but was met with an expressionless face.

Ristevski, 47, had not been seen since she disappeared on June 29 last year, when she reportedly left her Avondale Heights home in north-west Melbourne following an argument with her husband, Borce.

In December, police carried out a search for the missing mum in dams and grassland at Toolern Vale, about 25 kilometres from where the body was discovered.

There have been reports that Ristevski's mobile phone pinged on transmission towers on the Calder Highway, near Gisborne, the day she vanished.

Ristevski's nephew, Chris, was reportedly stunned when told by the Herald Sun of the potential breakthrough.

"I'm shocked, I haven't heard anything about this so I'm still trying to take it all in," he said.

"We haven't heard anything from the police.

"Obviously you fear the worst but we will just have to wait and see if it's her. It would be a bit surprising because the police told us they were searching in the Diggers Rest area."

Homicide investigators and forensic police spent several hours at the site before removing the body on Monday night.

While police tape had been removed from the scene on Tuesday morning, it was expected that a line search would be taking place to search for further evidence.
