This Video About Tomato Vs. Barbecue Sauce Is A Bloody Clever Take On Diversity

You say tomato, I say tomato.

A clever new video in the lead up to the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras uses a family backyard barbecue to explore the ideological divide that still holds back marriage equality in Australia.

The concept is disarmingly simple. Sitting around the backyard table, Dad invites his son to tuck in and get some barbecue sauce on his plate. Shifting nervously in his seat, the son slowly prepares himself for an announcement, then stands up and clears his throat.

"Actually Mum, Dad... I like tomato sauce," he says.

A few moments of silence ensue, then Dad laughs it off as a joke. The son steadies himself, and reiterates: "No Dad, I'm a tomato sauce man. Always have been."

Gran's moment comes at the end.

After taking a few moments to compose himself emotionally, Dad rushes over and embraces his son in a warm, loving hug. After all, who cares if you're a barbecue or tomato sauce person?

The real brilliance comes once they sit back down. The son turns to the man next to him, they share a kiss, and you see they're both wearing wedding rings. No one bats an eyelid.

Because it's just not a big deal.
