A 69-year-old male has drowned and a 66-year-old woman is in a critical condition in hospital after the international tourists were pulled from the water by lifeguards at Bondi Beach on Thursday.

Emergency services were called to the beach at around 4:45pm to perform CPR on both individuals after the pair, who are related, were taken out of the surf by lifesavers, according to a statement released by NSW Police.

It is understood the tourists visited the beach as part of a group of international travellers before they found themselves in trouble at the southern end of the beach.

Lifeguards and paramedics repeatedly attempted to revive the man but he died at the scene, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The woman was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a critical condition.

Three other swimmers from the group of tourists were also rescued by lifeguards at the beach but did not require medical assistance.

"Lifeguards managed to pull all five from the water and performed CPR on a man and a woman," a Surf Life Saving NSW spokesman has said.

"Paramedics and lifeguards could not revive the man while they managed to revive the woman and she was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in a critical condition.

NSW Police have also confirmed they are currently investigating the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
