Before the collapse: the Azure Window in its prime

Malta's famous Azure Window is no more, in what Malta's Prime Minister Josef Muscat has described as a "heartbreaking" event.

The structure fell into the sea on Wednesday, after it was severely eroded from natural causes including overground and under sea swell, geologist Peter Gatt said.

Gozo resident Roger Chessell went to the coastline Wednesday morning to take pictures. He told the Times of Malta newspaper that the rough sea and wind conditions could have prompted the collapse.

"There was a big raging sea beneath the Azure Window," he said. "Suddenly, the arch collapsed into the sea with a loud whoomph, throwing up a huge spray."

Located off the western coast of Malta's Gozo Island, the spot was popular for divers, tourists and filmmakers alike.

The natural landmark is now perpetuated in the first season of popular HBO series 'Game Of Thrones' as well as in the original 1981 version of 'Clash of the Titans.'
